چکیده

Descriptive Experience Sampling (DES) is a method for exploring inner experience. DES subjects carry a random beeper in natural environments; when the beep sounds, they capture their inner experience, jot down notes about it, and report it to an investigator in a subsequent expositional interview. DES is a fundamentally idiographic method, describing faithfully the pristine inner experiences of persons. Subsequently, DES can be used in a nomothetic way to describe the characteristics of groups of people who share some common characteristic. This paper describes DES and compares it to Petitmengin’s [Phenomenol Cogn Sci, this issue] secondperson interview method.

Randomly sampling thinking in the natural environment.

Thought sampling, the experience sampling method (ESM), and descriptive experience sampling are 3 methods of randomly sampling thinking in participants' natural environments. All use beepers that signal participants to report aspects of their experience and behavior at random intervals. Thought sampling and ESM are quantitative methods, and standard validation studies have demonstrated them to ...

Mark Engelbert and Peter Carruthers Descriptive Experience Sampling : What is it good for ?

We defend the reliability of Hurlburt’s Descriptive Experience Sampling method against some of Schwitzgebel’s attacks. But we agree with Schwitzgebel that the method could be used much more widely than it has been, helping to answer questions about the nature and structure of consciousness in addition to cataloguing the latter’s contents. We sketch a number of potential lines of further enquiry.

Scientific Methods Must Be Public, and Descriptive Experience Sampling Qualifies

Hurlburt and Schwitzgebel’s groundbreaking book, Describing Inner Experience: Proponent Meets Skeptic, examines a research method called Descriptive Experience Sampling (DES). DES, which was developed by Hurlburt and collaborators, works roughly as follows. An investigator gives a subject a random beeper. During the day, as the subject hears a beep, she writes a description of her conscious exp...

I take the opportunity that Froese, Gould, and Seth (this issue) provide to clarify further (see the special issue of this journal, 2011 Volume 18 number 1) some aspects of Descriptive Experience Sampling (DES; Hurlburt, 1993, in press; Hurlburt & Akhter, 2006; Hurlburt & Heavey, 2006) by distinguishing DES from the Explicitation Interview (EI) method (e.g. Vermersch 2009; Petitmengin 2006; Pet...
